Authoring

Categories

A Category is a named section within a Publication — "Essays", "Notes", "Release notes". Every published Document sits in exactly one Category, and the order of the Categories is what a website uses to build its navigation.

Categories are managed from a Publication's Manage tab.

Note

In the AT Protocol record this is scribe.groups[], and the older Scribe CMS calls it a "Group". SkyScribe calls it a Category — see the table in Core concepts.

Adding a Category

Click Add New Category. Give it:

  • a Category title — the section heading readers see;
  • a URL path — the segment that appears in Document URLs, e.g. essays in myblog.com/essays/a-year-of-letters. It's suggested from the title and must be lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens.

The URL path is fixed at creation from this dialog; you can still change it later with Rename (below).

Renaming and re-pathing

Each Category has a Rename control (the gear icon). You can change both the title and the URL path.

Careful

Changing a Category's URL path changes the web address of every Document in it. Existing links and bookmarks to the old addresses will break unless the site that serves the content adds redirects. The Rename dialog warns you when the path is about to change.

Reordering

Drag Categories into the order you want, then click Save Order. Connected websites reflect this order in their navigation. You can also drag Documents between Categories here.

Deleting

A Category can only be deleted once it's empty — move or unpublish its Documents first. The delete button is disabled until then, with a tooltip explaining why. Deleting asks for confirmation.
