SkyScribe Sites
Site analytics
Every live SkyScribe Site comes with analytics, as part of PRO. There's nothing to set up and no other service to sign up for: as soon as your site is live, SkyScribe counts its visits.
An SDK-driven website can have the same analytics for free, once its developer adds two things to it.
Where to find them
Open the Publication your site shows, and choose the Insights tab. It's headed with the address it measures, for example Visits to your-subdomain.skyscribe.site.
Choose 7 days, 30 days or 90 days at the top. Each range ends today, and today's figures are only so far.
For a quick look, your site's own page (Subscription, then the site's Settings) shows the last 7 days' page views and visits, with a link here.
If you rename your site, its figures carry on: while the old address redirects to the new one, both are counted together.
The same goes for your own domain:
the figures include visits to the site's skyscribe.site address from before
you connected it.
What you see
- Page views — how many times a page of your site was opened.
- Visits — how many times someone arrived at your site, from another site or by typing its address. Moving between your own pages doesn't start a new visit.
- Page views per day — a bar for each day. Point at a bar to see that day's page views and visits.
- Top pages — the pages opened most often.
- Where visits came from — the other sites that sent readers to yours, such
as
bsky.app. Readers who typed your address, or whose browser didn't say where they came from, aren't listed. - Countries — where visits came from, by country.
The figures are fetched when you open the tab and kept for up to 10 minutes, so the tab says when they were last updated. New visits take a few minutes more to reach the figures.
Why the figures are approximate
Your site counts visits without cookies and without tracking anyone, so there is no "unique visitors" figure: telling one person from another would mean tracking them. And some readers use browsers or extensions that block analytics, so your real numbers are likely a little higher than shown. On a very busy site the figures can also be estimates rather than exact counts; the tab says Estimated when they are.
Note
Pages you open from SkyScribe (the link on your Dashboard or on Manage Subscription, or Visit On Site on a Document) aren't counted, so checking your own site doesn't inflate its figures. If you type your site's address into your browser instead, you're counted like any reader.
Who can see them
Only you, the Publication's owner. Collaborators can open the Insights tab, but it tells them the figures are visible to the owner.
If your subscription ends, your site is paused and the Insights tab asks you to resubscribe. Its figures come back when you do, as far back as the last 90 days allow.
SDK-driven websites
An SDK-driven website (one a developer builds themselves with the SkyScribe SDK, not via the site design wizard) can show its visits on the same Insights tab, free, headed with its own address. Its developer adds two things, both covered in the SDK docs:
- The SDK's analytics component, which counts visits the same cookie-free way as a SkyScribe Site.
- The Publication verification file, which tells other apps (and SkyScribe) that the website really belongs to your Publication. SkyScribe only shows a website's figures once it has checked this file, so nobody can see another site's visits by typing its address into their own Publication.
Until both are in place, the Insights tab says what's missing. Visits from before the file was added still show once it is.
Your own visits count, even when you open the website from SkyScribe, and the website's privacy policy needs to mention the analytics: that's up to the website's developer.
If a Publication has both a SkyScribe Site and an SDK-driven website, the Insights tab shows each one's figures separately, never added together. While your subscription has ended, the SkyScribe Site's figures are hidden but the SDK-driven website's still show.
